Renamed McLaren Port Huron is McLaren’s 12th hospital in statewide system

Port Huron, Mich. -- McLaren Port Huron and McLaren Health Care have completed their due diligence process and have received all regulatory approvals to enable McLaren Port Huron to become the 12th hospital in the McLaren Health Care system.  The definitive agreement, effective May 1, 2014, was signed by Philip Incarnati, McLaren Health Care president and CEO, and David Thompson, Blue Water Health Services Board chairman.

The agreement paves the way for immediate expanded health services in the Port Huron area, including a new cancer center, facility improvements and upgraded technology and equipment.

“The Blue Water Health Services board, in conjunction with the Port Huron Hospital board and executive and medical leadership, has worked diligently over the past year to ensure that the future of this community’s health care options would remain secure,” said Thompson.  “We are thrilled to join McLaren Health Care, and are confident that this transition will significantly enhance the quality of care our community already receives from McLaren Port Huron.”

Under the terms of the agreement, McLaren Port Huron will maintain its local board of trustees and its current leadership.  The hospital will remain locally governed and able to make decisions for the benefit of our local community.  Thompson will join the McLaren Health Care board of trustees.  McLaren Port Huron will be renamed McLaren Port Huron.

The agreement also provides capital funding for the construction of a new cancer center and a new inpatient tower.  The hospital expects to break ground for the cancer center early in 2015 with construction of the inpatient tower beginning later in 2015.

“This is the culmination of many months of careful discussion and planning. We are excited to move forward with this partnership and work with the highly regarded medical professionals at McLaren Port Huron,” said Incarnati.  “For McLaren Health Care, it means we can expand quality, compassionate health care into the Blue Water and Thumb areas of Michigan.”

“In May 2013, McLaren Port Huron announced that we had begun a strategic review to determine the best way to strengthen and grow the hospital’s facilities and services.  Joining McLaren Health Care allows us to remain a non-profit, to retain local decision-making, and to secure the future of high-quality, accessible health care for the local community,” said Tom DeFauw, president and CEO of Port Huron Hospital.  “And with McLaren Health Care’s support and resources, we will be better equipped to manage the operational demands stemming from the Affordable Care Act.

McLaren Port Huron will provide updates to the community as more information becomes available. Community members can go to to submit questions.
