Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Port Huron, MI – McLaren Port Huron is pleased to announce that its 2013 Community Cancer Report is now available on the hospital’s website, www.porthuronhospital.org.

“The information in the report reflects the scope of our program and the level of commitment of McLaren Port Huron administration, physicians, nurses and cancer care professionals to ensure the highest quality of care for cancer patients and their families,” says Anthony W. Boutt, MD and chairman of the hospital’s Cancer Committee. “The Port Huron Hospital Cancer Committee is committed to providing quality care and improving quality of life for all cancer patients with the ultimate goal of a cure for all cancers”.

The report includes the year’s accomplishments; five-year cancer survival data as it relates to the National Cancer Data Base; a review of 2012 cancer cases; the top five cancers diagnosed at the hospital in 2012; and a comprehensive listing of the hospital’s cancer resources. This year the report includes more focused information on breast cancer, with a look at symptoms, health risks and the exceptional services offered at McLaren Port Huron for diagnosing and treating breast cancer.

“Over the years, McLaren Port Huron’s Community Cancer Program has evolved into a mature, well respected, superior program. Accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) since 1990, it exemplifies what it means to be a clinically excellent community based cancer program,” says Tom DeFauw, president and CEO. “Our 2012 accreditation survey resulted in a three year accreditation with commendation. This recognition is a testimonial that Port Huron Hospital really does provide the very best in cancer care. We’re dedicated to offering the very best in today’s cancer treatment to people right here in the community.”

Also, as a result of this accreditation survey, early in 2013 the ACoS CoC recognized McLaren Port Huron with its 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award. McLaren Port Huron is one of only 84 programs in the country and the only hospital in the state of Michigan to earn the 2012 award, and one of only a handful of hospitals across the country to earn Outstanding Achievement Awards back to back.

According to the ACoS CoC, patients receiving care from an accredited program are ensured that they will receive comprehensive quality care including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment close to home.
