Port Huron Hospital plans events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.  Port Huron Hospital will observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a variety of special programs.  

Free Mammograms – Throughout the month
Women’s Wellness Place will offer a limited number of free screening mammograms for women who have not previously had a screening mammogram and have no health insurance or who are unable to afford a mammogram. A physician’s order for the mammogram will be needed. Call 810.985.2663 to make your appointment.

Breast Cancer Survivor Brunch – Saturday, October 26
Port Huron Hospital will present its 10th Annual Breast Cancer Survivor Brunch Saturday, October 26, 10 a.m. - 12 noon, at Fore Lakes Golf and Banquet Center. Breast cancer survivors and their guests will be treated to a keynote speaker, brunch, door prizes, vendor displays and a spirit of celebration.  Ardie Hayes, registered nurse and breast cancer survivor, will speak about Sharing the Sisterhood, the invisible bond between survivors and the mission they share to educate others about breast cancer. Cancer Support Group for Women – Tuesday, October 8
Women are invited to attend this support group to help cope with the struggles that all cancers, including breast cancer, can bring. All are welcome, whether you are newly diagnosed or need support through cancer treatment. Meetings are held in Women’s Wellness Place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. Look Good… Feel Better – Thursday, October 24
This program helps women cope with changes in their appearance during cancer treatment. Trained cosmetologists give instructions and tips on wearing wigs, scarves and make-up. Port Huron Hospital also offers each participant a personally styled wig, a wig care kit and a complimentary bag of cosmetics and products, made possible through the Donna Niester Breast Cancer Fund at Port Huron Hospital. This group meets the fourth Thursday of the month from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Port Huron Hospital Jefferson Building, 1320 Washington Ave., Port Huron. The following events organized by local individuals and businesses benefit the Women In Need program at Port Huron Hospital. This program assists women who have not previously had a mammogram and/or do not have insurance. Donna Niester Breast Cancer Fundraiser – Monday, September 30
Donna Niester invites you to wine, dine and shop to support breast cancer care Monday, September 30, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Harborside Office Center – 4th Floor, 1411 Third St., Port Huron. Please RSVP at 810.966.0900. There is no cost to attend this event.

Blue Water Area Chamber – Business After 5 “Think Pink” Gala – Thursday, October 10
This networking mixer will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. at Paul Mitchell The School - Great Lakes, 2950 Lapeer. Services such as mini facials, manicures, pink hair extensions and scalp treatments will be offered for a donation. Donations benefit the American Cancer Society and the Donna Niester Breast Cancer Fund. Call 810.985.7101 to register.

American Cancer Society - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – Saturday, October 12
Join the Port Huron Hospital team at this American Cancer Society walk to raise awareness and money for breast cancer.  Registration begins at 8 a.m., walk begins at 9 a.m. at St. Clair County Community College. Cost is $25 donation to the American Cancer Society.

RadioFirst - Bowling for Boobies – Friday, October 18

Salon PiZazz - Let’s Wear Pink Hair – Throughout the month
Salon PiZazz and many other area salons are offering pink hair extensions to those who would like to show their support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Extensions cost $10. Salon PiZazz will also be offering pink extensions in Women’s Wellness Place on the following dates/times: 7 – 9 a.m. October 3 and 17; or 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. October 9, 17, 25 and 28.

Classic Nails - “Nail” Breast Cancer – Throughout the month
