McLaren Port Huron evaluating potential acquisition to larger health care organization

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Port Huron, MI – The Blue Water Health Services Board of Directors announces today that it is evaluating the potential acquisition of McLaren Port Huron and its subsidiaries by a larger non-profit or for profit organization to help meet our long-term needs.

“We looked at the shrinking population and economic downturn the Port Huron area has experienced over the last few years.  Then we looked ahead to continued reductions in Medicare reimbursement and unprecedented changes mandated by the Affordable Care Act.  We realized we need to investigate options that will help the community continue to access local, high quality healthcare,” says Tom DeFauw, president and CEO, McLaren Port Huron.

Requests for proposals will be issued this summer.  The process could take up to one year to complete.  The Blue Water Health Services board is directing the review process with the help of Juniper Advisory, a Chicago-based financial advisory firm.  Patient care services will not be interrupted or changed through the evaluation process.

“McLaren Port Huron has a strong operating margin and continues to have a solid bottom line with very little debt,” says David Thompson, chairman of the Blue Water Health Services board.  “That’s why we’re looking at options now, while we can evaluate our choices from a position of strength.  We’re giving ourselves time to conduct a thorough review.”

“The board will be considering larger, not-for-profit or for-profit organizations that can secure the hospital’s future and continue to care for the community. We are looking for a partner that will understand and respect the local culture and enable us to advance and expand access to care,” says Thompson.  “For patients, it is our hope that an acquisition could result in expanded services, facility modernization and the purchase of new technology.  Access to the most advanced care in our community remains a top priority of the board.”

McLaren Port Huron will provide updates to the community as the review process proceeds.  Community members can go to www.porthuronhospital.org/ask to submit questions about the process.
