Nursing Excellence is the Heart of McLaren Port Huron

McLaren Port Huron’s drivers, patient population and variety of service provide our nursing staff with opportunities for a wide range of experiences. Clinical Nurse Specialists support the nursing staff with advanced nursing expertise. We are dedicated to nursing excellence. In support of nursing excellence, the nursing education department offers a formal orientation program tailored to individual needs. Ongoing staff development is provided through formal and informal programs such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), wound care, and pain management. Continuous education is paramount for maintaining competence in a changing health care environment.

3 East Surgical Unit

  • 18 bed unit

Goals: Three East services are equipped and staffed to provide care for post-op surgical patients and medical patients meeting admission criteria.


Types of patients: The most frequently cared for surgical patients include Total Joints (Joint Connection), as well as bariatric patients (Lap Band) and general surgeries.  Medical surgical patients may also be utilized on Three East.  Examples of medical surgical patients include but are not limited to:

  • Asthma
  • CHF stage I and stage II, not of new onset                                                             
  • COPD
  • CVA or TIA
  • Cellulitis
  • Seizures
  • Remote telemetry  

Staffing Plan:

Method of care delivery is a team nursing model with strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and cooperation.  Nurse to patient ratio is 1:6 on the day shift and 1:7 for the midnight shift.  Back to Top

4 West Medical/Surgical Unit

  • 34 bed unit
  • Specializing in Congestive Heart Failure, Pneumonia, Wound care, Diabetes
  • Surgical patients consist of abdominal and other surgical procedures
  • Remote telemetry capability
  • Nurse to patient ratio is 2 to 5/6 Back to Top

5 East/Oncology

  • 28 bed med/surgical unit
  • Oncology specialized area provides patients with a quiet, homelike atmosphere when they require chemotherapy, palliative care, symptom control, and hospice/respite care.
  • Family involvement to promote and support a healing environment.
  • Surgical patients includes orthopedic, peripheral vascular and neurological procedures that specialize in cervical and spinal repair
  • Nurse to patient ratio ranges from 1 to 5/7

6 East - Selective Care

  • 39 beds—central monitoring room
  • Team oriented staff
  • Interventional cardiology—PTCA, stents, AICD, ablation
  • AMI, ACS
  • Open heart patients 24 hours post surgery
  • Complex medical surgical patients

Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology Labs

  • The Cardiovascular lab consist of two rooms that do a mixture of cardiac and vascular procedures in each respective lab. We apply the nursing process with emphasis on assisting in the diagnosis procedure, assessing pre-op, intra-op, and post-op needs of our patient, planning intervention, and education our patients and their families on the outcome of the procedure.
  • The EP lab has a dual modality performing a mixture of cardiovascular and EP Procedures. The combined EP and CVL makes a total of 3 labs. Back to Top

Emergency Center

  • 27 bays
  • Trauma rooms, traditional EC rooms and rooms for rapid treatment of minor emergencies
  • Work closely with EMS

Family Birth Place

  • 17 LDRP suites, 1 overflow
  • 4 bed triage
  • On Unit Operating Room
  • Family Centered Care in a single room maternity care model
  • Low and High Risk Care
  • Nurse-to-Patient ratio is 1 to 1-2 laboring patients depending on acuity of patient and 1:1-4 post partum patients depending on acuity
  • Services offered include: Childbirth Education, Lactation Education and assistance, Epidural Services, Electronic Fetal Monitoring, Cesarean Birth, and VBAC
  • Staff include RN’s, Unit Assistants, and OB Scrub Techs
  • Observation Nursery
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
    • 4 Level II bassinets
    • Capacity for 8
    • Services: Cardio respiratory monitoring, Mechanical ventilation and an Isolation Room Back to Top

Intensive Care Unit

  • 12 bed unit
  • Patient diagnosis: medical/surgical/open heart/post cardiac intervention/acute & chronic conditions
  • Special services: continuous cardiac monitoring, vasoactive/antiarhythmia infusions, hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, intra aortic balloon pumping, and both temporary/permanent pacemaker management
  • Average occupancy 58% with an average length of stay 4.7 days
  • Nurse to patient ratio is 1:1 to 1:2. (1:1 ratio- Open Heart and Intra aortic balloon patients)
  • Comprehensive Orientation:
    • New graduate up to 6 months,
    • Seasoned staff from 1 to 3 months
  • Staff includes: RN’s, Secretaries, and Nurse Aides
  • Computerized charting
  • DAS (Data Acquisition System-vital signs transfer from bedside monitors to charting monitors)
  • Barcoding of medications
  • Follow AACN (American Association for Critical Care Nurses) standards
  • Keystone Project members since 2004:
    • Decreased VAP’s (ventilator associated pneumonias) by over 50%
    • Decreased CRBI’s (Catheter Related Blood Stream Infections) to “0”
  • Rapid Response Team (“A” Team) membership available after 2 years critical care experience

Mental Health Services

Our full service Mental Health Service includes:

  1. Inpatient Mental Health Unit
    • 23 beds
    • Serving the adult and geriatric population
    • Voluntary and involuntary patients
    • Treat a broad range of psychiatric disorders
    • 4 to 1 patient/staff ratio
    • Staff is comprised of RN’s, LPN’s, Mental Health Techs, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Recreational Therapists.
  2. Partial Hospital Program
    • 17 chair Day Treatment program for patients with psychiatric disorders
    • Patients in this program are diagnosed with a depressive or anxiety disorder
    • Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 3:00pm program.
    • Staffed with a full time RN and a full time Social Worker
    • Patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist.
  3. Outpatient Counseling Center
    • Staffed with three, hospital employed psychiatrists, one therapist (LMSW), two Customer Service Associates, and a Registered Nurse
    • Mental Health Professionals treat adult and geriatric patients
    • Consultatively evaluate patients for prerequisite to having Lap Band surgery or Pain Clinic treatments
  4. Emergency Psychiatric Services (EPS)
    • 2- hour emergency service
    • Psychiatric RN is available to assess all patients coming into the Emergency Center with a Mental Health need. Back to Top 

Observation Unit

The intent of this unit is to group observation patients in a designated area that allows rapid treatment, assessment of response to treatment, and the expected discharge

  • 11 Bed unit
    • 5 semi-private rooms with bathrooms
    • 1 private, handicap accessible room with bathroom
  • Telemetry capabilities
  • Patient Diagnosis: Asthma, Chest pain, Congestive heart failure, Shortness of breath, Smoke inhalation, Syncope, Headache, Seizures, Vomiting/dehydration
  • Staff include RN’s and Nurse Aides
  • Nurse to patient ratio is 1to 6 Back to Top

Surgical Services

Perioperative Services experiences over 8,000 surgical cases per year. The diverse caseload ranges from open heart to minor surgery. We are supported with the latest technology from Draeger & HP Merlin.Back to Top
